Going through the COVID-19 pandemic without insurance and stable housing, Gregory was unable to prioritize his health. Not only was he avoiding his regular check-ups due to high health care costs, but he also needed to find a therapist for his mental health and anxiety.
He struggled to access COVID-19 tests and places to quarantine making it impossible for him to visit his family safely. Without stable housing options, Gregory resorted to living in his car to reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure. This had adverse impacts on his well-being, health, and ability to connect with his loved ones.
The cost for mental health coverage without insurance was a huge barrier for Gregory to get the therapy and health care he needed. After doing research online, Gregory learned about Apple Health (Medicaid) and applied for coverage through Washington Healthplanfinder. When he discovered he was eligible for Apple Health, Gregory was finally able to make an appointment for his mental health evaluation. Since then, he’s been on a regular routine with his therapist.
Gregory feels empowered knowing that Apple Health will cover the cost of his therapy appointments. Knowing his health care is covered and has an established mental health care routine, he can work towards using the tools he’s learning in therapy to save on his finances, career planning, and finding more secure housing.
When asked to share his advice for what other’s should do if they’re unsure about applying for Apple Health, he shared “…don’t hesitate, it’s better to try and get the help than not try at all”
