Arbor Health Hospital uses Starts with One campaign materials to prevent opioid misuse.

One honest conversation is all it can take to help prevent opioid misuse. The Starts with One provider toolkit, a partnership between Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) and the Washington State Health Care Authority, equips health care facilities, providers, and patients with the tools necessary to start important conversations about responsible opioid use.

Arbor Health Hospital success

Providers across Washington have seen the difference the toolkit can make. Diane Markham has worked at Arbor Health Hospital, a Critical Access Hospital in East Lewis County, for almost 20 years. As the Marketing and Communication Manager, she knows what resources are reaching providers as well as the community.

"I think everyone should implement the Starts with One materials,” she shares. “Prescription opioid misuse is an important conversation that people need to have for awareness. Having these materials at Arbor Health helps our providers and nurses have conversations on this topic with patients."

Using the toolkit

The toolkit includes resources like:

  • Talking points for providers to have conversations with patients who are prescribed opioids.
  • Prescribing best practices checklist to reference important prescribing guidelines.
  • Educational materials that patients can take home, equipping them with information on responsible opioid use and alternative pain management.

Implementing the toolkit is simple; reference the toolkit factsheet for recommendations on where and how materials can be used so that your facility is set up to successfully implement the resources.

Visit the Starts with One website to request a free toolkit and find informative videos and digital resources for your facility.
